Modbus protocol analyser

Fri, 28 Feb 1997 12:20:10 +0800 (SGT)

Many thanks for the reply to my previous query about terminal server/multiport serial cards. I have another question about product :- Is there such a product like "Modbus protocol analyser" ? - snoops modbus traffic on RS232 and RS485 lines and dispaly traffic in user friendly manner, such as displaying modbus address, function code. - Easy to use modbus message string composer. For example, brings up a few dialog boxes that prompt for a configuration parameters such as address, function code, etc and then composes a one-time test message string to be sent out. - Work as modbus master and slave for testing/debugging of its counterpart. I will also interested to know if there are buyers for such a product. Regards.

news@csi.po.my asked: Applied Systems Engineering in California have test sets that do what you ask for. They have products for many protocols, including a couple of flavours (I think) of modbus. Contact Jack Verson aseinc@best.com for details.

Calta Computer Systems Calgary Alberta Canada, 403 2525094 voice or 403 2525012 fax or cccompute@cadvision.com for email. They have at least two windows based products that I have used with WFWG3.11 for about 3 years that I have been very pleased with. Essentially they perform the following:

1. Simulate modbus Host

2. " " Slave

3. Monitor modbus traffic

4. Simulate and establishes a DDE connection to excel

Works with PSTN modem or direct connection. Very useful, reliable and inexpensive. These products save a lot of fussing around with setting up Modicon PLC hardware, switches, analog inputs etc, because they provide simulation for analog and didital inputs from the process and simulate coil outputs, and I/O registers. Highly recommended.

I believe Baily Network Managements APTI (Advanced Programmable Test Instrument) may do what you are looking for. It can monitor and/or generate test sequences for Modbus and other protocols. Contact Larry Reynolds at Bailey Hueston (713) 274-5000. Dara Ambrose.

Protocol Converters

Fri, 25 Apr 1997 12:25:07 -0400

Greetings everyone, I am looking for a gateway that can interface between Modbus protocol (RTU or ASCII) and Ethernet network running TCP/IP protocol. Does such device exist? If not, any suggestions? Many thanks.

You may be use PLCs (GE, Modicon, Siemens, A-B or other) to be gateway interface Modbus convert to Ethernet TCP/IP.

It will depend on how the message is formatted in the TCP/IP Ethernet layer. Rotork Instruments in the UK (+44 1582 399499) use both Ethernet TCP/IP and serial communications in their SCADA system supporting Modbus RTU and ASCII. The ethernet communications consist of Modbus messages encapsulated within TCP/IP formatted data. Propriety stand-alone processors are used to convert between serial and ethernet in the field. If this is what you are after then give them a telephone call.

searching for SCADA basics

Tue, 17 Jun 1997 13:48:32 -0400

Hi, I am currently starting to research the SCADA industry for information on the best approach to implement SCADA protocol in existing instrumentation. Initially I have found that there is no clear industry standard concerning SCADA, therefore many industries and consulting firms have taken their own approach. I am looking for any information regarding SCADA in general, information on the SCADA market, and any implementation details that could be helpful. I have been told that implementing MODBUS
